Best Hardside Luggage 2024 Comparison Chart

Here is a comparison chart of all the top-rated suitcases I will cover to help you choose which best suits you. You can sort (on desktop) the chart by name, volume, rating, and price range.

This is just a quick comparison chart. Read the full breakdown of each brand and its unique features.

Price shouldn't be the first factor. I've included some hardside luggage that starts at $89 and one that starts at $1445. Yup, that's right, $1445.

I've done this intentionally because everyone finds value in different things.

The Main Difference Between Hardside Luggage vs Softside Luggage

The main difference between hardside luggage vs softside luggage is obviously the material. Hardside luggage is more protective than softside luggage, but is that the only difference?

If you plan on packing anything that can't be banged around you can pack it carefully in softside luggage, but where you place it becomes more critical. You will also have to wrap in something protective.

With hardside luggage, it's still a good idea to wrap the item to protect it, but hardside luggage can take a lot more abuse of the baggage handling at an airport, protecting your valuables inside them.

Design Differences

One of the main differences in design is that hardside luggage is a clamshell design.

With a clamshell design, you lose the depth compared to softside luggage.

But with two even sides to pack in, it does allow you easy access to items without having to dig through the whole bag when you need to pull something out.

main difference between hardside luggage vs softside luggage

Texture Designs

The other advantage is to hardside luggage is, they often come with more colour choices, but more importantly, different texture designs on the outside.

This makes your hardside luggage unique and easy to spot on the luggage carousel compared to the red and black softside luggage that everyone has.

Buying Guide for the Best Hardside Luggage for International Travel

What should you consider when choosing a new suitcase? We often get caught up in price first. More expensive doesn't always mean better quality or features. Just like cheap and value aren't the same.

A $100 piece of luggage that only lasts two years of trips, has less value for you than a $250 suitcase that lasts three to four times as long.

I'll go over the main features to help you find the best travel suitcase for what you need, whether that means throwing it in the trunk of your car to explore your own backyard or jet-setting off to Europe.

Airline Restrictions

Let's start here. When choosing a hardside suitcase that you plan on flying with, you will want to stick within the airline's limitations.

Every airline has its own restrictions. Most use similar numbers, but it's best to check before you book a flight according to their restrictions.

Here is a list of the most common airlines around the world with links directly to their baggage information page. Save the page so you can refer back later!

What's Important to Know?

Before picking the best hardside luggage for your next trip there are a couple of specifications you need to know about.

Airlines will base their luggage restrictions on three factors:

  • Dimensions
  • Linear Length
  • Weight

Luggage Dimensions

We are very familiar with luggage dimensions from the size restrictions that airlines put on carry-on luggage.

We'll all hate to hear the dreaded, "Can we please see if your bag fits in here?" You should always check the airlines' size restrictions. The dimensions can be found on each airline's website

The measurements they are referring to, are the outside measurements, including the wheels and external handles (not the telescopic handle).

The measurements are the length, height and depth of the suitcase. When you are buying hardside luggage, you will find every luggage company will have this listed in the specifications.

Each airline will have its own restrictions. It can also vary depending on if you are flying internationally or domestically. Always check with the airline before flying.

Example

Air Canada size limitation for a carry-on suitcase is 21.5" H x 15.5" W x 9" D (55cm x 40cm x 23cm).

Delta's size limitation for a carry-on suitcase is 22" H x 14" W x 9" D (56cm x 35cm x 23 cm).

Just looking at the two dimensions above, they are close in their dimensions but they have different linear lengths

Linear Lengths

Some airlines may refer to this as linear inches. This is the total of all three dimensions added up together.

For example, a carry-on bag that is 22" H x 14" W x 9" is 45 linear inches long. 22+14+9=45

Typical industry linear lengths for international flights are:

  • Carry-on Luggage: 45 linear inches (114 cm)
  • Checked Luggage: 62 linear inches (157.5 cm)

For domestic flights, it may be different. Always check with the airline before travelling.

Weight Allowance

If your checked luggage is overweight, you could be charged between $100 - $200 extra when you get to the airport.

The typical industry weights allowances for international travel are:

  • Carry-on Luggage: Must be able to lift it to the overhead bin (in some cases airports have weight limits e.g. Beijing, Singapore)
  • Checked Luggage: 50 lbs (23 kg)

For domestic flights, it may be different. Always check with the airline before travelling.

Did you know that your suitcase weight could be 25% of your weight allowance? Learn all about buying the best hardside luggage for your next trip.

Hardside Luggage Sizes

What is the best hardside luggage size for you? That is a personal choice. Depends where you plan on travelling and ultimately what kind of traveller you are.

What Kind of Traveller Are You?

The Kangaroo

You want to get there quickly and avoid lines. You have become an expert in packing, with the ability to pack a month's worth of stuff in a carry-on.

Much like a kangaroo, you will stuff every pouch with something just to avoid checked luggage fees.

The Chipmunk

If there is room, you will fill it. Watching a chipmunk stuff more and more nuts in its mouth is just as awe-inspiring as watching you get three more pairs of jeans, sweaters and shoes in your suitcase when you expand it.

All you need is strong zippers.

The Horse

You are bringing everything, and you don't need anyone to carry it for you. You will go to that checked bag limit of 50 lbs, a full carry-on and any personal item you can bring.

On the way back, if those souvenirs put you over the weight limit, so be it.

Let us know in the comments what kind of traveller you are!

What Size of Hardside Luggage is Best?

Luckily companies have designed a luggage size just for you. There are three main sizes of luggage:

  • Carry-on luggage
  • Medium checked luggage  (one person)
  • Large checked luggage (two people sharing)
Suitcase sizes

A typical carry-on bag is around 49 Litres (13 gallons).

A typical medium checked bag is around 79 Litres (20 gallons).

A typical large checked bag is around 99+ Litres (26 gallons).

Carry-on Luggage

Most airlines have a specific size that is allowed for carry-on luggage. Usually, this is around 45" linear inches (114cm). Dimensions will vary with each airline.

Carry-on luggage will usually be around 22". Some luggage companies offer a "plus" size for carry-ons that are slightly bigger or expandable. That makes them great for weekend trips.

You may sometimes have an option of a removable USB charger for charging your phone or other devices.

Medium and Large Checked Luggage

How big is a medium compared to a large suitcase? Every suitcase company has a different interpretation.

You will also see some luggage given the size in the name, such as 25 inch spinner. These give you an indication of medium versus large mainly.

Luggage around the 24"- 27" range is a piece of medium checked luggage.

Luggage that is 28"+ refers to large checked luggage. This often refers to the approximate height of the luggage.

In my experience, a medium hardside suitcase is big enough for one person for a long trip. A large hardside case is good for two people to share.

We all pack differently, so it's up to you to decide what is best for you.

Weight of Hardside Luggage

When travelling long distances, like a trip to Europe you may want to find the best lightweight suitcase for international travel.

Most airlines have a weight limit of 50 lbs (23 kg). How important is the weight of your hard case luggage? It can be more than 25% of your weight limit!

There is a common misconception that hardside luggage will be heavier than a soft-sided suitcase. With today's new polycarbonate materials you will find hardside luggage in the same weight class as its softside friends.

The weight of hard case luggage varies quite a bit between sizes and brands.

A large hardside suitcase can weigh up to 12lbs! This means it might be more durable. You may find the absolute best lightweight suitcase, but that will come with a higher price tag.

Options on Hardside Luggage

Wheels

Nowadays, most hard shell luggage has four 360 degree spinner wheels. You will find the old style of two wheels on some softside luggage. Some rolling duffle bags and softside carry-ons may still have two wheels.

These directional spinner wheels will either have one wheel or double spinner wheels on one axle. I would recommend the double spinner wheels, especially if you are travelling to Europe.

Double spinner wheels are less likely to get caught in grooves and cracks than single spinner wheels. Europe is full of cobblestone. You don't want to be fighting your suitcase.

Look for sturdy wheels. I had a cheap suitcase in Europe on one trip. The cobblestone destroyed a wheel. On my last day, I dragged my suitcase on public transit and through the airport. 100% would not recommend.

Handles

If you are a person like me that likes staying at vacation homes or boutique hotels in Europe, then the handle will be your best friend.

Many small boutique hotels or apartments you rent will be in 4 or 5 -floor buildings without elevators. You will want your hardside luggage to have handles on the side especially.

This makes it so much easier getting up and down stairs without thumping the whole way.

TSA lock

TSA approved combination lock

TSA  Approved Combination Lock

You should never put valuables like cameras or laptops in your checked luggage. Some of your other things still have value like brand-name clothes or maybe you are bringing back some souvenirs of value.

The luggage that has a TSA approved combination lock integrated into the case is far more secure.

Softside luggage where you attach a TSA lock to the two zipper pulls can be opened with a pen and closed again without you ever knowing. With TSA locks built-in, this pen trick can't be used.

Compartments

Everyone has their own preference as to whether they like compartments in their luggage.

When it comes to checked luggage, some will have liquid-proof pockets in case anything explodes it doesn't get all over your clothes.

Some bags have unique features like built-in laundry bags.

Carry-on hardside luggage may have special pockets for laptops.

Sleeve Pockets

Because you are looking at hardside luggage, the one thing that is missing in the carry-on size is somewhere to put your stuff for quick access at the airport.

You may want a place for important documents like passports. We often travel with tablets and laptops too. Now some of these hardside carry-ons have a place for them.

Some companies have added a soft zippered sleeve pocket on the outside of their carry-on as an option.

Containment Systems

With hardside luggage's clamshell design, something has to secure all your things. Otherwise, it would all fall out when you close it.

There are a couple of different systems in hardside luggage to hold all your stuff in. Some hardside luggage will incorporate multiple systems.

Cross Straps

These are straps that clip together holding everything in. The con is smaller items will fall through.

Zippered Compartments

They are usually made of a mesh material and zip close to cover the top of one side of the clamshell. Some may have a pocket on the outside of it too.

Compression systems

Compression systems use a buckle system and a flat semi-ridged flap to help compress your things allowing you to take up less space, especially with bulkier items. Some have a flat pocket on the outside also.

Expandability

Flying domestically versus internationally may have different restrictions on weight and suitcase size that you are allowed to fly with.

Expandability can really increase how much stuff you can bring. It allows you to carry bulkier items, like winter jackets, or bulky sweaters.

If you are travelling by car, train or bus, then you can fill that baby up, expand away!

When you are flying, check with the airlines on their suitcase size and weight restrictions for the route you are flying.

The nice thing about an expandable suitcase is that you can use the expansion when you need it and not use it when you can't. The versatility may be worth the couple of extra dollars to you.

Carry-ons - Chargers

Some hardside carry-ons come with battery packs so you can charge your electric devices.

They usually pop out so you can charge them or not be tethered to your suitcase.

Some will be on the inside, others like this Away carry-on are accessible from the outside.

They do take up a bit of space on the inside of the carry-on, but not enough to make a big difference.

1. Away Luggage Review

Why is this my top-pick? Easy.

  • Lightest suitcase for the price
  • Solid build and durable
  • Premium luggage for a mid-range price
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Great features

The detachable USB charger is something that will always be used during those long layovers.

You'll love the hidden laundry bag that's there when you need it and gone when you don't.

We've all had something spill in our bad. Away's removable, washable liner is a great feature to combat accidents.

Away Carry-on Charger

Away has four main sizes. Carry-on, Bigger Carry-on, Medium and Large. You can get each of those in polypropylene or aluminum.

They also offer an hardside expandable spinner version of each size in polypropylene. They give you an extra 2.25 inches.

Just remember that using the expansion may put you overweight or not within the linear length. For a carry-on, that means you may have to check it. Whereas, for the medium or large you may have to pay extra if you go overweight or size.

The expandable version does give you versatility. If you are travelling in a car, bus or train where weight and size don't matter, load it up!

The Bigger Carry-on is a perfect match as a set with the medium or large, and even nests inside the full size luggage for better storage.

Away offers an aluminum luggage edition is a luxury option, but not for a luxury price compared to other brands. It has a clasp closure system with integrated TSA locks, keeping all your stuff safe.

I love the compression strap system on the one side, allowing you to compress bulkier items or keep things from bouncing around.

The more you buy, the more you save. Invest in a set and get a discount.  Plus you'll get free shipping as well.

Away is so confident you'll love it they offer a 100-day trial. Try it for 100 days and if you don't love it, you can return it.

Carbon Neutral Hardside Luggage

If you are looking for stylish, eco-friendly, award-winning hardside luggage, this is it.

I own this luggage now! It's one of the most durable hardside luggage sets out there. I can attest to that.

It gets even better because it is carbon neutral and made of recyclables. The environmental factor is just something I believe in.

The lining is made from 15 recycled bottles, the zippers are recycled, the handle is made from recycled aircraft aluminum and it has fine details like vegan leather trim and handles. It offsets the carbon emissions of your first trip with it.

The internal compression straps help pack it tight. The zippered side has a large pocket on the outside for little things.

There are two versions of the carry-on. The carry-on plus is slightly larger, which makes it just outside some airlines' allowable size for domestic flights, but may fit in the overhead bins of a long-haul flight. Always check beforehand.

That being said, the bigger carry-on can fit 4-7 days' worth of clothes and 2-4 pairs of shoes. This makes it great for even local travel.

Save money when buying a set of carry-on and check-in.

4. Roam Custom Luggage Review

If you are looking for custom luggage to truly call your own then Roam is it.

Choose from one of 8 sizes, then choose one of 8 colours for the front and one of 8 colours for the back.

Oh how about choosing from 10 colours for trim, zippers, handles, binding, wheels and a monogram patch.

So we've established that these are the coolest customizable hardside luggage out there. What about features?

First off, Roam luggage has an extremely durable polycarbonate shell and water-repellent zippers. The ball-bearing wheels will give it that smooth ride and last much longer. Try it for 100 days. Don't like it? Return it no questions asked

There are four sizes and expandable versions of each, giving you 8 suitcases to choose from. The expandable option gives you great versatility. On the large suitcase, The Expedition, it gives you 89 L of room to stay under the 50 lbs mark for air travel, and 121 L when you are travelling by car or rail.

A lot of hardside suitcases have one side with a compression system and one zippered side. Roam has a compression system on each side with a thin pocket on the outside of each.

What Roam does brilliantly is the expandable version of The Expedition Large roller comes in at half an inch (no airline should question that) over the industry-standard linear length of 62 inches when fully expanded.

5. Samsonite Stryde 2 Luggage Review

Eco-friendly Hardside Luggage

This is another eco-friendly series of luggage. The liner is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.

This is a unique piece of luggage. The check-in rollers are a square shape that allows you to stack your carry-on on top of it, giving you one less thing to carry as you rush through the airport. It even has a strapping system to secure it so you don't have to worry about losing it.

Another thing that this unique shape offers is when you need to carry it. Especially if you are staying in an apartment or need to lift it upstairs, onto trains, or  over things like curbs. It is the same height as most carry-ons at 22.6" for the medium. even the large is only 24 inches tall.

They also come with loads of unique features. Things like the snap-in cube packing system and the handles adjust one inch at a time making it comfortable for anyone to use.

We all know that zippers are the weak point on any luggage. The Stryde 2 has superior Fuzion™ YKK zippers, and also includes a zipper pull repair kit in case a zipper pull breaks.

For all the features, you'll be surprised at the price.

If you see only the Stryde 111 come up, this means the Stryde 2 is out of stock currently (it's popular!). The Stryde 111 is a premium version of the Stryde 2.

6. Samsonite Cosmolite 3.0 Luggage Review

Are you looking for the lightest suitcase out there? This is it. With the large Cosmolite 3.0 coming in at 5.8 lbs, it's lighter than most carry-on hardside suitcases on the market.

It is also extremely durable with its woven thermoplastic Curv™ material.

If you plan on flying then don't get the extra large check-in Cosmolite. Most airlines allowed linear length is 62", and the extra-large comes in at 70.9".The extra-large is great for bus, car and rail travel with the ability to hold an incredible 44 gal (167L) of stuff.

The Cosmolite does come at a premium price, which is my only knock on it. For that price though, you are getting the lightest luggage out there with a limited lifetime warranty. It will last you a long, long time.

They offer a set of carry-on and large or extra large which saves you money when you buy the set. Shopping on their website also saves you 15%

7. Samsonite Voltage DLX Luggage Review

Are you looking for a hardside luggage set that is affordable? Then consider the Voltage DLX.

The Voltage DLX is a unique-looking piece of durable luggage that will make it easy to spot at the airport.

For a low-cost piece of luggage, it has everything you need. The carry-on even includes a USB charging port, something usually found on more expensive suitcases.

It also expands to an extra 1-inch for when you need it. The WetPak™ pocket protects your things from liquids that may accidentally leak.

When buying the Voltage DLX make sure you pick the right size for your style of travel. The large is too big for most international flights, so check in advance if you plan on flying internationally.

The price of this luggage is really affordable. You can get a two-piece luggage set (and 10-year limited warranty!) for less than a one-piece of most mid-range priced medium size hardside luggage.

8. American Tourister Upland Luggage Review

Spending a ton of your hard-earned money on luggage isn't where you put your value. Maybe you just want something that can hold your stuff and get it to where you are going.

That's where this set comes in. It is the best hard shell luggage set on a budget.

This luggage is a set of affordable hard-sided luggage that is reasonably lightweight and just works. It is well-rated and will get the job done. What more do you need!

It's a hardshell suitcase that has a TSA lock built-in, retractable handles, top and side carry handles and more than enough room for all your things.

It's perfect for the budget traveller, student traveller, or anyone wanting to spend their money on the trip, not on a piece of expensive luggage.

This luggage is so affordably priced, that you can get a full set of carry-on, medium and large hardside luggage for the same price as most single pieces of medium-sized luggage.

My one knock on this hardside luggage is the warranty of only 3 years.

9. Rimowa Luggage Review

This is high-quality luxury luggage at its finest. This is for those with discerning tastes, this is it.

People are looking for this high-quality and craftsmanship in their luggage.

They have a unique series, including three versions: polypropylene, aluminum and a hybrid of the two.

The design of this luggage has such a classic look. This luggage will make you stand out.

When you get into the hybrid and aluminum series, you get a true clamshell with a clasp closure system with integrated TSA locks, keeping everything inside it safe.

The Rimowa Essential Lite series is a polypropylene hard case that only weighs 8.2 lbs (3.7kg) and gives you an incredible 24.1 gallons (91.3L) of space.

The aluminum series is made of high-end anodized aluminum that will last a lifetime and is absolutely gorgeous.

It has reinforced corners, and cushioned axles on its wheels making this hardside luggage roll smoothly, almost feeling like it is floating.

There are custom options available on the wheels, handles and leather tag. They also have 9 different sizes. This is the highest priced luggage set on this list.

My two knocks are the price and warranty. This is an extremely high-quality product. Its pricing just puts it out of the reach of the average person. I also wish the warranty was longer for such a luxury suitcase.
