Will you be waking up to a view of the Eiffel Tower, or starting your day grabbing a croissant at your neighbourhood Parisian boulangerie? To me this is more important than whether I have black out curtains.
It's broken down by four of the best neighbourhoods to stay in in Paris (colour coded) with a description of each neighbourhood. In each area I've listed three apartment hotels, each for a different budget.
Are you looking to learn more about Paris and all its neighbourhoods? Head over to this post to learn all about every neighbourhood and what it has to offer.
New Trend in Accommodations
Accommodations in Paris are shifting to something new. Airbnb Paris has come under fire in France in recent years. The city of Paris sued Airbnb for €12.5 million for advertisements on 1000 illegal rental properties.
Now, this doesn't mean you can't find an Airbnb accommodation in Paris. What is happening is municipalities and locals all over Europe are pushing back against these rental properties as they take living space away from the local population.
Hotels have been watching this closely. Now they are offering what people want, a room with more space, that includes a kitchen and fridge. Get the local experience of going to your local grocery store and making some meals in your apartment.
Alternative to Airbnb
Born were the Paris apartment hotels (also called serviced apartments, self catering apartments, or aparthotels), of which Paris has many now. Let's find that perfect hotel apartment for you.
No more fighting for that one available Airbnb in the area you want. They are run like a hotel. This means more rooms available, safer rooms, and extra services, all which Airbnbs can't offer. No waiting in a cafe for hours across town to get the keys (I've had to do that with Airbnbs several times).

Before You Book an Apartment Hotel in Paris
Remember to consider the time of year. Shoulder seasons will be cheaper and are less busy than the summer months in Paris. You can find some of these apartment hotels at 50-60% off in the off-season. If you are on a budget, consider these times.
Misconceptions About Paris Hotels
There are few things that many tourists don't realize about booking hotels in Paris (a lot of Europe for that matter).
You see it in all the reviews, especially from my North American friends. The reviews may come across as negative, but it's just how things are in Europe. Finding a hotel in Paris (or apartment) with one or all of the things below is common.
- Small rooms
- No elevators (lifts)
- No air conditioning
- Two single beds/linens
Understand What You are Booking
Small Rooms
Rooms in Paris are smaller in comparison to North American standards. You will find rooms are about 15-25sqm (161-270 sqft) throughout Paris. These hotels and apartments are in old buildings, which adds to that European charm, feel and vibe. Expect rooms to be smaller.
Elevators (Lifts)
One of the best areas to stay in in Paris is Le Marais. It is over 400 years old. The first elevator ever built was in 1887 in Germany. This means that many of the cute Parisian hotels (and apartments) you want to stay in don't have elevators. They don't hate you, it's just the way it is.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning is a very North American thing, and many places in Europe don't have it. That doesn't mean you can't find places with air conditioning. I've included several aparthotels on this list that include air conditioning.
Two Single Beds
You will often find two single beds instead of a double. This is so that people can choose to have separate beds, or you can push them together to snuggle up.
It's a smart thing. Many people choose to do this in their homes too. This way, each person will have their own blanket. No more stealing blankets. It's a relationship saver!
Check the Amenities Before You Book
Do you have mobility issues? Do you not want to carry your luggage up three floors? Is A/C an important feature to you?
Then make sure to check the description of Amenities before you book. The booking sites will disclose all the specifics. Read the descriptions. Then you won't show up and get caught off guard.
Arrondissements of Paris
Most of the sights in Paris you will want to see are in the city centre. Twenty arrondissements (districts of Paris) make up the city. The majority of Paris' famous landmarks in the arrondissements are along the Seine River.
Photo credit - © Paris Tourist Office by Jair Lanes
The majority of Paris' iconic tourist sites you will find in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th arrondissements. In France, "arrondissement" means a district (basically a neighbourhood). Staying anywhere near one of these districts will put you within walking distance to many of the sites.
If not, the Paris Metro is super-efficient at getting you around the city in less than 20 minutes to most places. You'll find a metro station near all of the tourist sites.
Paris Arrondissement Map
Below is a map of all the major sites in Paris and which arrondissement you will find them in. This map will help you choose where to stay in Paris when picking a hotel apartment.
